Norwich North MP Chloe Smith has spoken out against laws that unfairly discriminate against people with mental health issues.
The Mental Health (Discrimination) Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons today, during which Miss Smith praised the work of campaigners for mental health issues including Norwich Mind and Rethink Bridges and spoke for the government in her role as minister for political and constitutional reform.
The Bill repeals section 141 of the Mental Health Act, which sets out that an MP automatically loses their seat if detained under the Act for more than six months. It also amends similar discriminatory provisions in legislation concerning jurors and company directors. It is being led by Gavin Barwell MP as a Private Member’s Bill.
Miss Smith said: “We have broken down one area of discrimination in law against those who suffer from mental health conditions. I know how important this is from the work I do as a constituency MP, and I know how important it is to campaigners and individuals up and down the country.
“I am pleased to have been able to stand up and speak out on behalf of my constituents who have been affected in the past by the unfair discrimination that the current legislation allows. Norwich North MP Chloe Smith has spoken out against laws that unfairly discriminate against people with mental health issues.
“Speaking about mental health openly and honestly in Parliament shows that it is not taboo.
“This Bill says that people who suffer from mental health conditions are often able to recover and continue to be part of civic life. There are no second class citizens. I hope this Bill will help stop the stigma surrounding mental health.”

How much more out of touch can you get? People with mental and other disabilities are facing a 71,- cut to their benefits, thanks to the drastic enforced by NCC and the coalition. Cuts that hits the poorest and lower echelons of our council, whilst the top tier’s are oblivious to the pain we are all supposed to share. Shame on you Chloe.

Chloe, I suppose you’ve been fighting tooth and nail to increase funding for NHS mental health provision from your chums at The Treasury? You haven’t actually been party to any funding cuts which has seen support for people with mental health conditions cut have you? No, I’m sure you haven’t as that would look horribly hypocritical. Perhaps you’d care to have a little chat with Mr Paxman over your stance on this matter?

You would have to be mentally challenged to either vote or give this representative of the useless tory party any creedence! They and the liberal democrats have made a bad economic situation worse,attacked the poor,pensioners,and the disabled and done nothing,repeat nothing to ease the unfair and punitive taxes that many working people pay! If the government disappeared overnight the economy would probably improve!

Surely if an MP is detained under the Mental Health Act for more than 6 months they are not able to represent their electorate and someone else should be allowed to stand in their place? There are far greater everyday discrimination concerns affecting people with mental health issues, or does the newly promoted MP not want to rock the Tory boat?
